Combining for 10 points in the last four minutes, junior forward Sam Marshall and senior guard Peyton Chun stepped off the court after a 10-0 run in which the duo each knocked down two big shots. The run they just led their team on turned out to make all the difference in the game, as the Cowboys held together with great defense and more hot shooting, defeating Rockwall 47-33.

After the teams stayed fairly even up to halftime, with each side receiving key second chance points, the Cowboys went into the third quarter up only 27-22. Coppell came out firing away from behind the three-point line, going on a 10-0 to take a commanding 40-26 lead.

“We had an intent to push,” Coppell coach Kit Pehl said. “We had an intent to have a fast offense, to have a good transition offense, and that was our goal. We wanted to get a real strong push early (in the half) and get a chance to play our bench.”

Throughout the third, the Yellow Jackets’ offensive attack was extremely ineffective against the Cowboy defense. Coppell continually forced turnovers and contested shots, leading to Rockwall producing only four points throughout the entire quarter.

“We felt like they were better inside than outside, so we wanted to not let them get down low,” Pehl said.” We were less concerned about guarding the three point line. Our scouting report turned out to be correct.”

In the fourth quarter, the Cowboys were able to hold on to that 14-point lead even without several of the starters in the game, going on to win 47-33. Senior guard Peyton Chun scored the game high and tied his season high with 14 points. The Coppell backcourt hit eight three-pointers and played solid on-ball defense throughout the night.

“To this point, we’ve been very consistent from the perimeter,” Pehl said. “It lets us play inside out and outside in. For us it’s certainly an advantage.”
