Cowgirls fall to Marcus, 49-24

The Coppell Cowgirl’s basketball team lost 49-24 in a hard fought game against the No. 6 team in the state, the Flower Mound Marcus Lady Marauders last night at Coppell High School.

The Cowgirls, after Tuesday’s loss, still have yet to win a game in district play.  Heading into the game the Cowgirls had a record of 0-7 while the Marauders had a record of 7-0.

Senior guard Caitie Galvin lead the team in scoring contributing 12 points while junior post Elena Grijalva scored 2 points.

Coppell started strong and managed to finish the first quarter with a 7-6 lead.

“I thought our energy was good and we were playing smart and composed,” Galvin said. “We were all started really well and the first quarter showed that.”

Marcus rallied during the second quarter and outplayed the Cowgirls to turn the game around and lead 22-14 at the half.

“We were only eight points down at the half,” Grijalva said “Then starting in the third quarter, we started playing sloppy and didn’t take care of the ball like we had been in the first half.”

The third quarter was when the Marcus girls really out played and outworked Coppell.  Marcus outscored Coppell 16-4 in the third quarter leading 38-18.

In the fourth quarter, Coppell worked hard and finished the game but ultimately came out on the short end of the scoreboard.

“We definitely did better this game than the last time we played Marcus,” Grijilva said “We did well talking on defense and running what our coaches told us to do.”

The Cowgirls have two games left in their season.  They play the Denton Ryan Lady Raiders at Ryan High School on Friday, Jan. 31, before playing their final game against Lewisville at home.

“We just need to keep our defense tough and really focus on taking care of the ball of offense,” Galvin said “If we put together all of what we’ve been working towards this season, I think it’ll pay off in these last two games so we can finish on a good note.”
