Mahon to tower above competition in the fall

After watching his brother and now former Coppell gunslinging quarterback Colby walk the stage on graduation day, rising senior Blake Mahon will head into the 2013 football season with something else on his mind, learning a new position.

Mahon, who caught two passes for 30 yards as a junior tight end last season, will be spilt wide more often for the Cowboy offense, giving whomever is named the starting quarterback for Coppell a tall target on the outside.

“Its not really much of a move,” Mahon said after the annual football spring game on March 23, “Now, I am more of a split-out tight end so I can catch the ball a lot more.”

Along with the move, Blake’s 6-foot-6 inch frame has garnered the interest of several college scouts. Mahon received athletic scholarship offers from Illinois, Rice, Utah State and UNT in mid-March.

All of the attention has culminated in Mahon receiving and accepting a scholarship offer from Baylor University.

Thomas, area’s top recruit, narrows interest to Top 13

Ranked the No. 28 best high school football athlete in the nation by Yahoo’s Rivals.com, rising senior defensive end Solomon Thomas has to sort through a handful of college interests. Many campuses have probably waited with baited breath to see if they would end up on his “still considering” list.

Well, that wait is now over. Thomas, according to the Twitter account of Coppell head coach Joe McBride, has narrowed his list to a baker’s dozen.
