Elliott, Coppell fall to Marcus in extras, 1-0

    By John Loop
    Sports Writer

The pitching duel that pitted Coppell senior ace Jake “Big Red” Elliott against Marcus’ deceptive junior Connor Dotson lived up to the hype on Tuesday.

Dotson got the better of the Cowboys this time, though, as a single from Marauders senior outfielder Austyn Laird won the game for Marcus in the eighth inning, 1-0.

Elliott still had a strong showing, fanning 11 Marauders over seven and a third innings and only giving up one hit, the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth by Laird. This outing for Big Red was different, a 2-0 shutout of the Marauders.

Dotson gave the Cowboys fits at the plate all night, striking out 15 over even innings of work. The Marauders’ ace had some rough goings in the early stages of the game. Dotson walked four Cowboys in the first three innings, but the Cowboys were unable to capitalize.

The two pitchers held both offenses in check for seemingly the entire night. Rain, in the forecast on Tuesday night, began to fall at the beginning of the sixth inning, but wasn’t enough for the umpires to call the game. Marcus head coach Jeff Sherman had a short talk with Dotson after Coppell senior third baseman Tyler Jones laced a lead-off double down the third base line. Dotson then settled down and struck out the side to end the threat.

Coppell had another chance to push across some run support for Elliott in the seventh inning, when the Marcus infield mishandled two routine plays. This put senior designated hitter Hollis Rogers at second base and centerfielder Inman at first base. Dotson recovered again to shelve a Cowboy rally.

Meanwhile, Elliot kept the Marcus bats silenced, putting a pair of shutdown innings.

At the end of seven innings, the Cowboys and the Marauders were still locked in a scoreless tie.

Again, Coppell senior DH Hollis Rogers found himself at the plate as the potential hero in the eighth.

The Cowboys had senior shortstop Tyler Zabojnik at third base and senior catcher Matt Delaney at first base, but a heads-up fielding play by Marcus junior shortstop Romero Greer saved the Marauders from walking off the field losers.

In the Marcus eighth, it was the heroics of centerfielder Laird that allowed the Marauders move into a tie with Coppell for second place in District 5-5A. The senior’s single drove in designated hitter Dylan Rogers and preserve the 1-0 walk off win.
