The Cowgirls basketball season is coming to a close. With a district record of 2-7 and a total season record of 11-21, the Cowgirls play their last district game on Feb 5 against the Lewisville Lady Farmers.

The Lady Farmers edged the Cowgirls, 40-39, on Jan 4 in the season’s first meeting.

The Cowgirls must win their last district game of the season in order to make it to the playoffs.

“This time we plan to make more transitions and play with a very strong defense,” junior post Jaidyn Phillips said

Sophomore post Elena Grijalva led the Cowgirls with 11 points in the first meeting with the Lady Farmers, yet this was not enough for the Cowgirls to pull a win the first time around.

“Our last game determines if we make it into the playoffs and secure a spot.”Philips said. “We just need to work hard if we are going to make playoffs and stick together as a team.”

Starting the district season with a loss against Hebron, the Cowgirls were determined to play hard for the remainder of the district season. The Cowgirls were able to make a few comebacks along the way during the district season that will help them secure their spot in playoffs, if they are able to pull a win against the Lady Farmers.

“Our main goal is to make it into the playoffs and have the longest run possible, we just have to get past Lewisville for this last game,” Phillips said.

Playoff hopes still alive

Coppell has faced much adversity from tough teams such as Flower Mound and Flower Mound Marcus as they look to face the Lewisville Lady fighting Farmers. In order to make it to the playoffs, they must finish in the top four of their six-team district. Lewisville, Coppell and Hebron are tied in fourth with a record of 2-7.

Their chances are looking really bright as they only lost by one (40-39) in the last game against Lewisville. Hebron will also have to loose for Coppell to clench the playoff spot. They will be facing the Flower Mound Lady Jaguars (8-1) who are first in district.

Seniors closeout final game of regular season

Saying goodbye to the seniors is something younger players and coaches must get accustom to each year. With five leaving, half of Varsity will need to be filled by younger leadership.
“The seniors have all been great leaders and have inspired us to try our hardest,” sophomore post Elena Grijalva said. “Some are vocal leaders on the court while others prefer to lead more with their actions.”
