National Red Ribbon week took place on the week of Oct. 26 – Oct. 30 this year. Red Ribbon week promotes and supporting a drug free lifestyle. Students participate by wearing Red Ribbon week ribbons, dressing up, and staying drug free. The week is an encouragement for the other 51 weeks of the year to stay away from harmful, life-threatening drugs.

“I enjoy red ribbon week because of the message it sends out to all the kids,” senior Meredith Braden said.

Students at CHS use this week to join together in school spirit, work for a common goal and dress up in themed clothing. Red Ribbon week is enjoyed by all students in every class and sends a message to younger students as well as peers in their own grades.

“I just love dressing up every day,” senior Shelby Crow said. “It is just a part of the fun of red ribbon week.”

Every day of the designated week, CHS assigned dress up days to support drug awareness and a drug free pledge. Monday was sock day, Tuesday was hat day, Wednesday was twin day, Thursday was your favorite band or club shirt, and Friday was Red Out.

Red Ribbon week was inspired by Kiki Camarena who grew up in a poor family with dreams of making a difference. Camarena eventually finished school, made his way through college and joined the Marines. After he finished his tour of duty, he joined the police force as an officer and made a choice to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The DEA sent Camarena to work undercover in Mexico. His mission was to investigate a large drug operation, which may have included parts of the Mexican police and army. On Feb. 7 in 1985, five men kidnapped, tortured and killed Camarena. His body was found one month later.

Out of his death emerged the Camarena clubs. These clubs had all members pledge to live a drug free life in honor of Camarena’s death and sacrifice. Because of this, the Red Ribbon week campaign rose.

“Camarena’s story is very inspiring,” freshman Kevin Tovson said. “The sacrifice of this one man started the entire red ribbon campaign. It makes you feel like this week is more than just an excuse to dress up.”

As CHS recognizes the death of a brave officer, it continues to promote a drug free life style to all of its students and teachers through the annual Red Ribbon week.
