In the first round of the soccer playoffs tonight, both the Cowboys and Cowgirls took the field with high hopes of moving much further than just the bidistrict round.
The Cowgirls were able to edge Plano West, 1-0, punning their ticket to the next round. Senior standout Chioma Ubogagu put the game-winner in the back of the net, which was enough as keeper Kailey Hicks was able to secure a shutout.
With the boys having a late kick-off at 8 p.m., the girls were able to arrive to cheer on the Cowboys in what was a 0-0 game in the last minutes of regulation against Hebron. Shortly after, the Cowboys entered overtime with the score still knotted up at nil before the Hawks headed in a crossing pass, which beat Coppell keeper Chris Hinze.
Still, the Cowboys were unable to break through Hebron’s tough defense and took a crushing defeat, halting their season sooner than expected. This Cowboys team had many players suspended in this past week and some crucial players quit over the course of the season, which weakened the boys’ roster and chances of advancing.
On the other hand, Ubogagu and the Cowgirls will continue their pursuit of another title in the second round, however, the opponent and time is still unknown.
