This week, September 26 to October 3, is Banned Books Week. It’s also National Chimney Safety Week; the juxtaposition of these two conjures images of Fahrenheit 451.
Important religious holidays this week are Yom Kippur and Dussehra. Yom Kippur is also known as the Day of Atonement for Jews, and is the most religious day of the year. Yom Kippur is the last day of the High Holy Days and features rigorous fasting and prayer.
Dussehra is a Hindu holiday in Nepal and is also known as Vijayadashamib, Dashain or Dasserra. The day makes the beginning of the Harvest season and traditionally, clay statues are submerged in the river. As the water softens the clay, the clay releases chemicals that purify the water for farming. Religious rituals are also performed to seek help from the gods.
