This Wednesday, Coppell High School held a school-wide toy drive to bring the Christmas spirit to children whose families can’t afford presents. The toy drive, sponsored by Student Council, WFAA, and Rachel’s Challenge, collected around 200 toys, and the Coppell community still has opportunities to give.

“[Wednesday was] the official day to bring your toys, but we started at the beginning of the week and had drop boxes at the horseshoe and in many teachers’ classrooms,” Coppell High School Student Council sponsor Sunny Richardson said. “All of the toys that are donated go straight to needy kids in the North Texas area.”

Richardson, who hosted the toys in her classroom and helped lead the project, emphasized the effect that this toy drive will have in the lives of the people who receive the gifts.

“I do believe that this drive can have an impact on peoples’ lives,” Richardson said. “Maybe they won’t get quite as much [as their peers] because of their circumstances, but giving them a better Christmas will help them feel more accepted with their peers and really add to the spirit of the season.”

Generosity was shown not only by the students of CHS, but also the faculty. Teen Leadership teacher Nicky Fryman demonstrated her spirit for the season by accepting monetary donations from her students, and then going out and personally selecting gifts to donate. By volunteering her own time and resources along with help from her classes, Fryman was able to donate over 60 toys to the drive.

“It’s hard for students to get out and buy the toys themselves, so I just wanted to make this available to the students,” Fryman said.

Not only did Fryman support this cause to get her classes more involved, but she wanted to show her children the importance of giving.

“I look at my two boys and how much that they have, and I want my children to grow up always realizing the importance of giving to others. That’s a big part of my family,” Fryman said. “[My husband and I] had my oldest son, Benet, who’s five, use some if his own money to buy toys for the drive… and we think that’s it’s important for him to be generous to the kids who don’t have as much as he does.”

CHS has really caught on to the spirit of giving with this successful drive. If you would like to donate toys to the cause, it’s not too late. Toy donations can be dropped off in Mrs. Richardson’s room (E218) until 11 AM Thursday, and there are drop off locations at Chick-fil-a and Tom Thumb that will accept donations through Friday, December 17th.
