Weeks of preparation.
One goal: win.
On Friday night at 7 p.m., the Coppell football team (3-0) opens District 5-6A play on the road against Hebron (1-2) at Brian Brazil Stadium in Carrollton.
“We are ready to do good things on Friday,” Coppell assistant coach Raynor Durham said. “We have been focused all week to face Hebron.”
Defensively, Coppell has zeroed in on breaking Hebron’s early-season consistency. Through three games, the Hawks have avoided turnovers, a streak that the Cowboys hope to disrupt.
“They haven’t had any turnovers all season,” Durham said. “We are looking to make breaks in their offense and force some turnovers.”
With an emphasis on discipline, Coppell has spent the past two weeks sharpening calls and building consistency on defense. Durham said the mindset heading into district play is focus and execution.
“Just being disciplined defensively and running our calls is the biggest thing,” Durham said.
Hebron begins district play on Friday as well, but the Hawks’ offense has been efficient at sustaining drives, which makes forcing turnovers much more important for Coppell’s defense.
Meanwhile, Coppell is coming off a Sept. 12 homecoming win against Arlington Bowie. With momentum on its side and two weeks of preparation, the Cowboys look to carry its sharp defensive play into district competition.
After last year’s 49-14 win against Hebron, the Cowboys aim to take them down one more time.
“We are going to be playing with discipline on Friday night,” Durham said. “Hebron’s a good team, but we are looking to be better.”
For Coppell, the matchup is also a chance to measure growth since the start of the season. With two weeks of practice behind them, the Cowboys prepare to show improved execution in all phases as they look to set the tone for the rest of district play.
