Coppell tennis defeated Plano East, 11-3, on Tuesday in the Class 6A Region I bi-district playoffs at the Coppell Tennis Center. Coppell (18-6) plays J.J. Pearce at the Coppell Tennis Center on Thursday in the area round.
Coppell junior Lexie Patton and freshman Palkin Gangwal won their doubles match, 6-0, 6-0.
“The matches were very good, and I played better than I normally play,” Gangwal said. “But, I could’ve hit more volleys and made more returns.”
After playing Plano East in district action last year, Coppell felt confident about the tournament. It prioritized doubles strategies, drilling eye formation and Australian formation during practice. Coppell seniors Sriya Meduri and Laksita Yuvraj won their doubles match, 6-4, 6-0.
“We communicated well at first, but in the middle, it fell,” Meduri said. “During the second set, we brought our communication back up which led to the win.”
Coppell continues to focus on improving doubles for upcoming tournaments.
“We want them to be comfortable getting to the net,” Coppell assistant tennis coach Chris Terry said. “We have very good baseline hitters, but in doubles, you need to be aggressive.”
