Coppell High School junior Prateek Malkoti has been elected as the 2023-2024 class treasurer. Malkoti plans to continue his passion of serving others and be someone that others can come and talk to.

Class treasurer: Prateek Malkoti

Coppell High School junior Prateek Malkoti is the 2023-34 class treasurer. Malkoti has served as class treasurer for the past three years and junior class representative.

What are the roles of the treasurer?

I won’t be handling money, but I will be signing off on things that have to do with money. This year [Student Council sponsor] Benjamin Stroud has set up the funds for student council, so I will be managing those and sending emails to people whenever money is involved.

Why do you like the treasurer role?

In ninth grade, I decided to go for treasurer because I felt like knowing how to handle money and knowing that value is important, and it’s become a little bit of a tradition for me to always try and go for treasurer. It’s not necessarily the money aspect of it, but the activities that I get to do and being able to know the value of money, and how it was handled in different clubs was always interesting to me.

Is business something that you are interested in pursuing?

It would be business if I wasn’t already in love with medicine. For me, personally, it’s the passion behind it that’s been driving me. I’m so interested in medicine and science in general and it’s like when you find something interesting and want to learn more about it, that’s what’s driving me to be more involved.

What about student council interests you?

It’s one of those clubs that everybody is a part of, like National Honor Society. But I really liked the idea of getting more involved with our school especially because I know that in ninth grade, which was my COVID year, being able to be involved with student council was very interesting because we were all at home.

Do you feel like student council has helped you grow as a person?

As an officer, getting to be involved with so many people who all want the same thing for our school has been very captivating and very nice, and I think it has taught me to learn about so many different parts of our school that I had no idea about. Student council has been that place where I get to talk to people that I have never even talked to before so being part of that new community has been very gratifying.

What is something you admire about this year’s leadership?

With this year’s leadership, everyone has been very dedicated. We all wanted it to be a rebound year because last year was rough in the beginning with student council not even having a sponsor, so this year was really the first year that we have gotten to do all the traditions that we had before COVID-19. Getting to do that again was really fun.

What is something you want to build on for the next year?

Next year I want to continue that passion. I want to continue serving others in our school and be someone that others can come and talk to because I love to make friends with everyone. I have a few ideas for next year, my personal favorite is having some sort of field day with all the fun traditional activities that we would do in elementary school. I also want to focus on the classic things we do every year like homecoming and prom.

What have you learned from student council?

Being able to adapt to change. In student council there are so many things that are changing whether it’s with the sponsors and whatever they want to decide on versus whatever the students want to decide on or the general rules that they have. There is so much adapting to fit into the role and the way that you treat fellow officers or handle things in student council so I feel like being OK with that adaptability will really get you far. Sometimes there will be dress up days that aren’t allowed or things that get canceled and sometimes I’ll get a text at eight in the morning saying “hey can you come help us with this” and I will just think that I’m not ready for this but being able to do things like that and fit things around your schedule is something I’d like to carry with me for the rest of my years.

What are your goals for senior year?

In general, I want to have a very toned down senior year. I want to focus more on my passions and things that I actually want to do. Within student council I want to carry on the traditions like prom. I actually went to prom this year to help with student council and I have a bunch of improvements that I want to make. It’s my last year and I just want to make it enjoyable for everyone.
