Coppell High School sophomore Dhruv Nalla has been elected as Healthcare Occupations Students of America vice president for the 2023-24 school year. This is Nalla’s first position since joining the club in his freshman year. Outside of HOSA, Nalla is also a leader of Tech Force.

What are the roles of the vice president?

I work closely with the president and help out with what she needs. I also make slides for our meetings and try to create more opportunities for our members.

What made you want to run for vice president?

HOSA hasn’t had many sophomores in a head position, so I wanted to see if I could do it as a sophomore. I also believe my skills in research and being a volunteer in my community will be really helpful as vice president. I know that the president has a lot of responsibilities, but I think the vice president can help and have a lot of impact.

What does it mean to you to have been voted on by your peers?

It’s a really great opportunity especially for my class because there’s not a lot of sophomores and also the fact that I’ve been a part of this club for two years now and I get to have a decision on the choices we make. That means a lot to me because I can bring in a lot of volunteering and research opportunities, I’m very thankful for this position.

What interests you about healthcare?

The main thing about healthcare is the excitement every day. If you work in a hospital setting, every day is different with patients coming and going, and I really like being able to give back to the community. It’s not something you get from other careers; it’s very hands on and interactive, which is what I like.

Do you know what you want to pursue in the field?

My parents are currently dentists right now so I have experience in the hygiene and dentistry field but I’m also interested in neuroscience or anesthesiology.

What is something that you admire about the current leadership?

They took a lot of initiative. There weren’t many opportunities, but the officers made the most out of what was there. Rebuilding last year after COVID-19 was hard, but they did a lot of things like the Dallas Marathon and drives. They put together a lot of events that we did not have last year so I think they did a good job.

What is something that you want to build on for next year?

I want to create more volunteering opportunities. Sometimes the way that it was approached wasn’t very well thought out and I can help because I have a lot of connections with the sophomores. I also want to add more opportunities for research and develop the hobbies of HOSA members. For example, if they play an instrument then I want to combine the two and create an opportunity to play music in hospitals. I want to create more opportunities like that.
