Cowgirls defeat Marcus in hard hitting game
Raising money for Operation Kindness
October 13, 2022
Rhythmic pounding echoed throughout CHS Arena as the pinked-out student section attempted to distract Flower Mound Marcus during its serve.
The additional support proved to be beneficial as Coppell won, 25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19 against Marcus at CHS Arena on Tuesday.
“We definitely hit well today,” Coppell coach Robyn Ross said. “Their hitting percentage was one of the best ones that they’ve had in district play. We also passed much better than we did against playing Plano West. That was the reason why we could run our offense well.”
The Cowgirls began with a strong lead as junior Kate McDonald served an ace. The Cowgirls then went on to win the first set against Marcus with several big back row hits by senior outside hitter Skye Lamendola, who currently leads the district in most kills this season. Klem aided with 10 kills and nine assists and three blocks overall, and senior middle blocker Ekwe Anweh contributed with seven kills, two digs and five blocks.
“I think I did better closing the block and pressing the six,” Klem said.
In the second set, the Cowgirls struggled to block senior outside hitters Brooke Brown and Maggie Cox. However, heading into the third set, Ross substituted Klem for junior setter Alena Truongto to spark some energy on the court.
The Cowgirls play at Plano East on Friday.
“We need to work on our serves,” Ross said. “We need to get more serves into the spots where we know we need to put the ball to get the other team out of their offense.”
The Cowgirls partnered with Operation Kindness, the largest no-kill shelter in North Texas to raise $4150. Prior to the game, puppies were available for adoption at the CHS Arena foyer.
