With only two minutes into the first quarter, the Coppell girls basketball team’s lead was clear as they were up by six points against Frisco Centennial.

“As a team we played great,” Coppell junior Jules Lamendola said. “We were really coachable and able to fix things on the fly, which is something we’ve been working on. We were really aggressive and I’m really happy with the way we executed plays.”

In the first quarter, Coppell had a few rushed passes which lead to steals from Frisco Centennial resulting in turnovers for Coppell.  However, the Cowgirl’s quickly regrouped and headed into halftime leading the game by 13 points.

“After the scrimmages, we had a couple things that we needed to work on and improve on,” Coppell junior guard Wavery Hassman said. “[Coach Ryan Murphy] prepared us to play Frisco Centennial as he told us about pressuring, press and how they play and guard ball screens. We really took this into account. In the locker room, [Murphy] hsd said to us that in the third quarter with seven minutes left he wanted us to be up by 20. By the end of the third quarter, it was a 30 point game.”

In the fourth quarter, the energy of the team and arena could be felt as sophomore guard Ella Spiller finished several fast breaks and ended the night scoring 27 points for Coppell.

“It kind of just came to me,” Spiller said. “I just saw the ball and I would go for it. I’m feeling pretty good about my performance tonight and I’m happy that the hard work that the team has been putting in is showing.”

Despite the phenomenal performance against Frisco Centennial, Murphy had anticipated this outcome.

“I’ve seen [Spiller] go off in scrimmages and practices. I’ve seen [India Howard] be physical and impose her will in the interior, I’ve seen [Hassman] attack ball screens and I’ve seen [Potter] shoot the lights out with all the work that she’s put in on that and I’ve seen [Lamendola] see the floor and make plays that other people miss so nothing in this game surprised me.

On Monday, Coppell plays at Colleyville Heritage at 6:30 p.m at Colleyville.
