In a defensive slugfest, the Cowgirls basketball team almost staged a miraculous comeback in a 28-25 loss to the Keller Lady Indians.

Junior center Chidera Nwaiwu scored all of the team’s 5 points to give Coppell the 5-1 lead after the first quarter. The Cowgirls then struggled offensively yet held relatively strong defensively to keep the halftime score 12-5 with Keller leading.

The Cowgirls came and surged in the third quarter from a couple of key shots from senior shooting guard Kaeli Stayer.

The fourth quarter was an intense fight between both teams trading the lead back in forth after multiple three pointers. The Cowgirls lead 24-23 with 2:10 left in the game, yet a Keller three pointer gave them the 26-25 lead. After a foul and two made free throws, the final in Coppell was 28-25.

“We started off really strong,” Junior small forward Paige Haas said. “We had a little drought in the middle of the game, and we picked it up in the fourth quarter. It was really close, but I feel like we could have played harder than we did.”

Haas also thinks that the team has some things they need to improve on specifically.

“We need to work on consistency,” Haas said. “We need to work on not turning over the ball as much and also just staying focused throughout the game.”

Even though the game was a struggle offensively, Haas thinks there are some positives to take from the game.

“This was the first time we’ve really stayed close to this team in a couple of years,” Haas said. “So we are all excited about that but we learned a lot about what we need to work on throughout the rest of the season.”
