This is preparation week for religious holidays that nearly rivals the Christmas season. Here’s a quick rundown:
Monday was the secular holiday Labor Day, which began in 1882 and was based on a Canadian tradition.
Next Tuesday, the 15th, is Laylat al-Qadr, an Islamic holiday remembering the day the holy book was revealed to Muhammad. Eid al-Fitr is the following Saturday, and ends the month-long fast of Ramadan.
Next Friday is Rosh Hashanah, which kicks off a Jewish holiday season that ends with Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah is considered to be the Jewish New Year, as it marks the beginning of the new calendar year.
